Ski Butternut MLK weekend update.
100% OPEN - one of only a dozen or so ski areas in NE that actually has 100% of their terrain open. A testament to our snowmaking team and the system we have invested so heavily in. Come enjoy beautiful Packed Powder conditions with miles of beautifully groomed corduroy. We've added some challenge with moguls on the steepest section of Downspout and on skiers left of Main Street.. So if you relish Bumps we've got you covered. Conditions will change throughout the day. Corduroy doesn't last long on a holiday weekend.
The frigid cold is gone, replaced by milder weather, sunshine and temps reaching into the upper 30's. All elements that should make for an awesome MLK weekend.
MLK - All Private and Children's specific full and ½ day lesson programs are sold out. There are a limited amount of walk in Children's program lessons available each morning. They are issued on a first come - first served basis.
Lessons are still available for any ability level, for ages 7+, in our group lessons, as well as our 1st Timer Learn to Ski or Learn to Snowboard programs. Our Child Care has a waiting list for Saturday and Sunday. There were still spaces available for Monday. Call 413-528-2000 x125 to reach Childcare.
TIPS for a busy weekend:
Arrive early - And use the website to learn as much as you can about what you want to do, where you should go, when you need to be there. Come informed. www.SkiButternut.com
If renting equipment - tell the cashier you want to rent for 2 or 3 days. Pay for it on your first time through rentals and you can avoid the line that will inevitably form at rentals each day. You will still need to purchase a lift ticket each morning but that is a much quicker process.
MLK holiday is generally a pretty busy weekend anywhere in ski country. Know ahead of time where you want to go for dinner and lodging and secure your spot with a reservation. A number of lodging and dining properties are featured on our website to help you make an informed choice: http://www.skibutternut.com/lodging/index.php
Enjoy tubing after skiing as another way to tire out the kids. Some like to grab a pizza a few bottles of soda and enjoy tailgate tubing party. Especially enjoyable the last two hours the center is open (6 to 8 p.m.) Saturday & Sunday and (3 to 5 p.m.) on MLK Monday, as the crowds start to taper off. Tubing is fun for the whole family.
The town of Great Barrington also has a nice Community Center with a large indoor pool, Sauna, weight room and Basketball court. That is if you still have energy.
If you have your own boots and are interested in testing out the latest and greatest skis from Atomic, Rossignol & Volkl go straight to the Demo Center. 3 hour and full day demos options are available. http://www.skibutternut.com/skishop/index.php
Eat EARLY or LATE to avoid the crowd. That means grab a bite to eat at 10:45 to 11:30 or wait till 1:30 to get a late lunch. With nice weather the place to head for a seat may just be outside on the decks. The Sun Deck at the base of Cruiser is the least utilized and you get to watch people skiing and riding on the Cruiser slope.
LIFT LINES will form - that is a reality on a holiday weekend. Don't get upset, be patient we'll do everything in our power to get you up the mountain quickly. Tip - head for the Triple (advanced slopes) or the Cruiser quad (easier slopes) chairlift early. If you have kids in tow, make sure they are ready and paying attention when they are on deck to load the chairlift.
SLOW ZONES - Pied Piper, Nuthatch & Cruiser are slow skiing zones. Warning - if you go fast in these areas you may loose your pass. Respect others and ski at a much slower pace when on these trails.
